Immigration Law Amendment Bill; If intentionally failing to pay taxes, permanent residency permits will be revoked

2024.03.07

The Japanese government has decided its policy to revoke permanent residency permits for foreign nationals holding the status of “permanent residents” if they intentionally fail to pay taxes or social insurance.
It is said that the Japanese government plans to submit a bill to amend the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act in the current Diet session.
The background behind this amendment bill is attributed to the fact that the number of permanent residents stood at over 880,000 as of the end of June last year, and it is anticipated that the number of permanent residents will continue to increase in the future. It also seems that the presence of malicious cases where taxes are intentionally not paid is another contributing factor.
